57. In a situation similar to Case 56, Hook, Line & Sinker (windward) and Luffing Leftovers (leeward) are on a beat, approaching the RC-boat end of a finish line in 10 knots of breeze and relatively flat water. They are both on port tack, bow to bow and about half a boat length apart as shown at left. Neither will be able to cross the line without tacking. If they do not tack they will pass about one boat length to leeward of the RC boat. About 3 boat lengths from the mark, Luffing Leftovers calls for "room to tack" in order to be able to cross the finish line.

Hook, Line & Sinker denies this request and takes Luffing Leftovers past the RC boat before tacking as shown at left. Luffing Leftovers lodges a valid protest.
