beat in 10 knots
of breeze and relatively flat water, Rough
Noogies
(windward) and Chocolate Chimp (leeward)
are
approaching the RC-boat end of a finish line. They are both on port
tack,
bow to bow and about half a boatlength apart as shown at left. Neither
will be able to cross the line without tacking and if they hold their
course,
both will hit the rather sizeable RC boat. |

About 3
boatlengths from the
RC boat, Chocolate Chimp calls for “Room
to
tack” but Rough Noogies responds “No
way!”
and forces Chocolate Chimp to pass on the
wrong side of the RC boat before tacking twice more to cross the finish
line in comfort. Chocolate Chimp lodges a
valid protest. |
