Tom's Revenge (starboard) is sitting
close-hauled with sails luffing on a not very crowded line in 10 knots of
breeze as shown at left. Teddy-O is
starting on port and looks likely to be crossing Tom's
Revenge by about one boatlength. As the gun goes, Tom's Revenge and Teddy-O
are 2 lengths apart. Tom's Revenge pulls
in his sails and his boat leaps ahead, carving a goodly slice out of Teddy-O. Both lodge valid protests.
