Wenona's harbour is full of boats with character. Lovely!!

At Arby's Bar & Grill, we were soon to discover that Pieceful Cottage,
the B&B we had liked so well in 2013, was closed for the time being.

Having gambled that we could get away without boom tent or sleeping gear - and now lost -
Hans and I bit the bullet and left for Crisfield where Captain Tyler's Motel would surely have a room for us.
........
To quote from my email to our fellow Chesapeake cruisers: Wednesday we arrived at our day's destination, Wenona,  only to find the B&B unavailable. Having gambled by not bringing tent or sleeping gear, Hans and I decided to sail back "home" to Crisfield after only only two beers and half a lunch in Arby's Bar & Grill.

exiting Wenona harbor, tiller - unhooked from the retaining line to let the rudder half-way up in occasionally shallow waters - fell out > boom gybed > Al overboard > despite heeling efforts by Hans, Al not able to climb in > did the Jeff thing by sailing into nearby shallow water > lucky we did not capsize though that would likely have made re-entry possible

The green track above was - not counting the zigs and zags - the course Hans and I sailed.     - click here for larger image

lovely port spi broad reach headed S towards Janes Is. in perhaps 8 knots of NNE breeze under mostly overcast skies as Al continued eating his take-away supper of delicious Deal Island Fries from Arby's.
........

some threatening-looking clouds to the NW that we were keeping our eye on when 15 knots of relatively cold ever more easterly breeze came out of nowhere when we were about a mile off the north end of Janes Is. > spi down post-haste and the Aero Foil luff spar showed its mettle for the umpteenth time as we re-set the genoa > decided that going downwind around the NW end of Janes was the lesser of two evils (better than beat into steadily nastier winds and rain) > long beat along Janes, mostly on port, and we opted for main alone > reminded why I don't like sailing under main alone: boat stalls out after tacking unless you are fast and bear away quite a bit
........

once past Janes we had the condos with blue roof as a landmark and a nice starboard tack close reach to the entrance of Somers Cove where the dead upwind fun began in a slight adverse current > two tacks to be proud of but the third saw us stall out: too close to the metal pilings to gybe around, so I called in the Aero Luff cavalry as was began to go backwards > the re-commissioned genoa was fortunately backable on the port side and we then completed our tack smartly onto port > we thought we heard cheering from the upstairs fish restaurant as we sailed past under full sail (which in fact was easier than main alone provided we didn't strap things in too tightly in the shifty cove winds)
no one to admire us, but we smartly planed into E section where we had been Saturday, luffed head to wind to douse the main near mid-channel at the inside end > a very brief stint of jib alone to get the boat moving towards our chosen slip > another fast furl and SHADES coasted in to a perfect landing
left boat at marina for the night > room at Capt. Tyler's where Jeff and Fran's boat was parked out front but we decided not to disturb them
One of the few "storm" pics that Hans got was this one which I at first rejected since it falls so far short of capturing the nasty feel of that suddeen cold and rainy blow. But upon closer examination, I am becoming increasingly fond of the intrepid mariner look that Hans captured here, to tghe extent that it is now my new profile pic on Facebook
