A lovely lake breeze takes us, in sunshine,
from Sturgeon Cove to the Benjamins
.....
Wednesday morning greeted us with a lovely sailing breeze out of the WNW...
..
... but even in such ideal conditions...
..
... we had to sail carefully to find our way around the many shoal areas in front of Sturgeon Cove.
..
The Rocket's track is marked in red. While Blue Mist decided to go over to the north side of the North Channel,
the Rocket crew was racing-ingrained enough to take the longest tack first while getting a close-up look at the north end of East Rous and Bedford Islands.
..
As you will see in the third photo below, Uncle Al got a textbook example of thermal lift which could be seen developing as a long line white cloud right above the La Cloche Mountains to the north. At about noon, the WNW wind, which had been becoming ever more patchy, gave up the ghost entirely when the Rocket had just passed the north end of Bedford Island. Ed and I anticipated a lengthy wait for the lake breeze. But less than five minutes later, Ed spotted the line ripples coming up the gap between Bedford and Amedroz Islands, and we soon had a nice sailing breeze sending us on our way on a lovely port tack reach.
..
Gull surveys his domain as we pass a rock off the north end of Schreiber Island.
..
Intrepid explorer, Ed, takes a bearing as we stop on a tiny island somewhere just north of Bedford,
to answer Al's call of nature, look around, wait for Blue Mist, and have a beer.
Explorer Ed in full regalia: hand bearing compass, binoculars and beer.
Note the thermal lift beginning to show above the La Cloche Mountains to the NW.
..
No good landing spots but, when you've got to go, you've got to go. In any case, the winds were light and rocks fairly flat (but slippery and slimy), so we pulled Rocket's bow up onto one a bit and tied a bow line around a heavy-looking rock before going exploring.
..
The west end of the "island": not a good spot for bare feet. Good thing Uncle Al was wearing his Birkenstocks!
..
The counter-clockwise "tour" is almost complete, the beers are done, and we're ready to proceed.
..
The lake breeze came in with its usual 12 - 20 knots of SW wind and in what seemed like no time at all, we had passed Bourinot and Amedroz Islands and luffed up to closehauled, aimed at The Sow and Pigs (above)...
..
...to try to go between Secretary Island and the south end of Croker Island (above).
Our destination du jour, the Benjamin Islands are mostly hidden by Secretary Island on the left.
..
A closer view of the south end of Croker. Note the greatly increased evidence of thermal lift to the north and west!
