Class Rules changes proposed for 2010 by the SWS |
|
OVERALL
RATIONALE We hereby forward our suggestions for the
2010 rules
revisions. This is just to give you a more detailed reason why we have
suggested these changes. We need to have peace in the Wayfarer class
and keep
the class united. We bring these revisions forward now in order
to
ensure that the racing will be as equal as possible for all Wayfarer
sailors
and to ensure that measurers will be able do their job without having
to guess
at what unavailable “official drawings” might be in time for the 2011
sailing
season. We feel that the Class must do everything
possible to
ensure that the aim of paragraph 1.1 - that we should race on equal
terms – is
reached as nearly as possible. A lot of the frustration we have seen
over the
last two years has come from what some have seen as the unequal terms
we have
had. Even knowing that the MK IV is different in
some very
important details on which we can not help owners of other versions,
our basic
opinion is that the same set of rules should be for all of us wherever
that is
possible. In order to minimize unfairness caused by
Rules differences,
I have measured a number of different "marks" and made a set of
measurements which should cover all versions. This also means that the
owner of
a MK II should, for example, be allowed to make his deck 40mm wider on
each
side. At the same time I have reduced the need for “official drawings”
to a
minimum by replacing the reference to “Official Drawings” with exact
measurements
wherever this was feasible. Using the maximum measured measures and
tolerances,
all versions should be covered and be put into a position to benefit
equitably. I really hope that the UKWA, USWA, CWA and
the NEDWA
will vote yes along with SWS. Best regards |

Existing wording: 7. ONE-DESIGN INTERPRETATION Each boat shall comply with the official drawings for its specific Mark and constructional type. ||
| 8.4 | Existing wording: 8.4 ... (Mark
IV only) Transom to aft edge of thwart to be in accordance with
Mark IV drawings. Proposed: 8.4 (Wood boats only) Transom to aft face of midships deck knee. 2058 +/-20 (6’9”+/- ¾”) Rationale: As this is only needed for wooden boats. |

||
| 8.6 | Existing rule: 8.6 (Mark IV only). If a
gunwale-to-gunwale scribe line is visible, it must be no more than 5mm
from the transom. If a gunwale-to-gunwale scribe line is not visible, 2
ticks at each chine must be visible. Proposed rule: 8.6 should be deleted. Rationale: As the scribe lines or ticks are a tool for the builder to cut the hull. Reference is made to 8.2 |
||
| 12.7 | Existing rule: 12. BILGE KEELS 12.7 Mark IV to be in accordance with
the official drawings Proposed rule: 12.7 Mark IV to be in accordance with the official mould. Rationale: As the bilge keels are made in the official mould there is no need of any specific drawings. |
||
| 16 | Existing rule: 16. PROJECTIONS
BEYOND (a) Bow fitting. Maximum projection beyond stem 13 (½”) Proposed rule: (a) Bow fitting. Maximum projection beyond stem 75 ( Rationale: The way the stem is defined in our suggested Appendix 1, it is necessary to increase this measurement in order to allow all marks to measure in. |
||
| 18A | Existing wording: 18A. RUDDER STOCK Material shall be wood or metal. Wooden stocks shall comply with the official drawings and specifications. Metal stocks shall conform to the intention of the Class Rules (Rule 1.1) and shall be of a design approved by the local NCA. Proposed: 18.A Material shall be wood or metal. Wooden and metal stocks shall conform to the intention of the Class Rules (Rule 1.1) and shall be of a design allowing the rudder blade to swing up and approvable by the local NCA. Rationale: As no official drawings are available, it should be up to the local NCAs to approve the rudder stock. |
||
| 19.1(c) | Existing wording: 19.1 Foredeck (c) (Wayfarer World and Mark IV only). Shall be in accordance with the official approved mould and drawing. Proposed: 19.1(c) (Wayfarer World and Mark IV only). Shall be in accordance with the official approved mould. ||
| 19.2 | Existing wording: 19.2
Sidedecks. Aft of thwart. ... (Wayfarer World and Mark IV only). Shall be in accordance with the official approved mould and drawing. Proposed: 19.2 ... (Wayfarer World and Mark IV only). ||
| 23.5 | Existing wording: 23. FLOORBOARDS 23.5 Extent. Shall be substantially in accordance with official drawings applying to specific version of boat. Proposal: 23.5 Can be deleted. Rationale: As no official drawings are available, this paragraph can be deleted. Rule 25 (hull weight) still has to be complied with. |
||
| 35.4 | Existing wording: 35.4

| 8.2 | Existing wording: 8.2 Length
overall. Excluding fittings. 4814 +/- 26 (15’9½” +/- (MK III only). Length overall. Excluding fittings. 4832 +/- 26 (15’10¼” +/- (Wayfarer World and Mark IV only). The hull and deck shall not deviate from the official moulds and drawing. Proposed: 8.2 Length overall. Excluding fittings. 4827 +/- 26 (15’10” +/- Rationale: If the measuring method shown in appendix 1 is used, it will be equal for all versions. The max. length given is based upon measures taken on 4 different boats: MK I Wood, W-239, 4835mm +S series 2, W-9355, MK III, W-10249 MK IV, W-10574 The measure chosen is therefore |
